Ekspert.io came out of a conversation over a beer between Alan and Jon.

Alan was the owner of a durable medical products company located in a very small town in Southwestern Minnesota. Jon grew up in a small town, went to Accounting school and somehow managed to move to a big city and become a management consultant and investment banker.

The beer was being consumed after closing the deal to sell Alan’s business to a very large competitor. Since they both grew up in small towns, Jon asked Alan if he ever imagined that he’d invent a unique product, create and grow the invention into a business and eventually sell the business. Alan’s answer surprised Jon. It was a simple, “Yes.”

Alan knew his idea was worth something. He knew that he could rely on his family and small-town friends to help him design and build the idea he came up with. He knew it would fill a need for thousands of people around the world. So, making the idea into a product, manufacturing and selling it was the easy part.

The hard part, according to Alan, was finding ekspertise as he navigated taking a product made in small-town Minnesota and shipping it worldwide. When sales were low, it was easy for Alan and his team to scale manufacturing, keep the financials in an Excel spreadsheet, etc. As the business continued to grow, Alan had to look outside the community for help. That’s where suddenly things become scary for him.

The logical place to look for talent was Minneapolis. But Alan didn’t really know a lot of folks there, especially the kind of people who’d have the knowledge and ekspertise to help him scale. So, he started asking around. Spoke with bankers, CPA, attorneys in the area. They referred him to various firms located in the Twin Cities and Alan wound up working with several of them. He installed a new ERP system to manage and track all the operations of the business. He put legal agreements in place to ensure his distribution network was protected. What he found though, is that it took a lot of trial and error to find the right people to work with.

One of the biggest challenges was simply geography. Alan’s business was 2 1/2 hours from Minneapolis.  2 1/2 hours from Sioux Falls.  Getting people to meet with him at his office (Alan happens to be in a wheelchair) was difficult.  So, he did most of the work on the phone.  When the eksperts did visit him, it seemed everyone knew something “was going on”.
